Get up to cyber-speed with the Essential Eight cybersecurity standards
Cybercriminals don’t care where you live. In 2024, almost 60% of New Zealand businesses faced a cyberattack, and one in 10 admitted to paying a ransom to regain control of their data.
While New Zealand doesn’t (yet) have its own set of baseline cybersecurity measures, Australia’s ACSC Essential Eight is an excellent guide to best practice security – and has gained increased traction with Kiwi companies. These eight measures provide a practical approach to improving your security posture. They include disciplines such as application whitelisting (so you only run approved apps), regular patching and updates of your software and operating systems, rolling out multi-factor authentication (MFA), doing daily backups of critical business data – and more.
It doesn’t stop there, though. There are four ‘maturity levels’ associated with these security measures. These range from Level 1, where you may have some measures in place but don’t take a structured or consistent approach to applying controls, to Level 4, where you have implemented a continuous improvement approach to your processes and take proactive measures based on threat intelligence and risk assessments.
Naturally, the more mature your security posture, the lower this risk for your business and those doing business with you. And you are far less likely to end up paying a ransom to a cybercrime group to get back what’s yours.
