What's happening at Yorb - Q1 2024

Daniel Goymer • Feb 20, 2024

It’s getting a little late in the year to still be saying Happy New Year, but it was the Chinese New Year last week, so I think we can sneak one last one in from Yorb.

Welcome to our inaugural newsletter for 2024. We’ve renewed our commitment to delivering a newsletter each quarter. This will include the latest Yorb Update, Technology News and Security Bulletin. Before you rush to the unsubscribe button, we’ll try and keep the shameless product plugs and marketing to a minimum.

A lot has happened at Yorb since our last newsletter, so here is a quick catch-up of the key milestones.

New Location

We had the opportunity to bring on a new location and consequently now have a branch in Westport. In late 2022 we were offered the chance to transition clients from IT@Work in Westport. The business owner was retiring and he suggested Tyler was the rock star we needed to be successful. We are very grateful for the opportunity that Brett from IT@Work has given us, and proud to be working with Tyler and the clients in the Buller region.

The Adoption of a New Business Framework

Over the years as Yorb has grown we’ve had several internal workshops geared to setting a long-term vision with a clear strategy to get there. These workshops never quite hit the mark, always feeling forced or structured to a larger enterprise. In mid-2023 we began our journey into the EOS business operating system, (https://www.eosworldwide.com/). All though we are still very early in our implementation, I am very excited by where this framework can take us, and the change it is already helping create. The EOS model is tailored to businesses between 10 and 250 staff and understands that SME’s do not work in the same way as enterprises. As the year progresses, I’m confident you will see plenty of positive change from us as your technology partner and EOS will be a core part of that change.

A change in leadership

After more than twenty years leading Yorb (and ComputerCare) from a humble team of five staff in Terrace End, Palmerston North, to our current team of 50~ across four locations, Wayne Masters stepped down from is day to day role at Yorb on the 31st of December. Between practicing his golf game, he will still be involved in the business as a Director and CFO.

I (Daniel Goymer) took on the position of CEO on the 1st of January, having worked closely with Wayne for all of those twenty years. I’m passionate about the company values and the direction we are headed in 2024. With a sharper business focus via EOS, new security products (& challenges), as well as exciting new technologies such as Microsoft Co-Pilot I believe strongly in the value we can bring our clients.

Where to next in 2024

We have developed a set of core values and goals for 2024 which we believe will ultimately deliver greater value to our clients, maximise your investment in your technology assets and improve service. Core to our focus is remembering that our role is to support you in delivering business outcomes, we understand technology in itself is not a destination. Expect to hear more from us throughout the year as we introduce these improvements, and please do give us your feedback. We take all feedback seriously as it helps us ensure we can meet your expectations.

Data stored in the cloud should still be backed up, there is a common misconception that once your data is stored with a third party your responsibility for said data ends. This is very far from the truth and Microsoft 365 is no exception to this assertion. Microsoft 365 has plenty of data redundancy features including: Encryption of data at rest. Redundant systems, including multiple mirrored copies of your data. The ability to recover deleted e-mails for up to 30 days, and deleted SharePoint files for up to 91 days. A version history on file changes, enabling access to previous versions. However, these features are not the same as a backup. We are frequently asked to recover files and e-mails that were deleted or corrupted beyond 365’s built in limits. We recommend all clients with a Microsoft 365 subscription also invest in the appropriate controls to keep your data safe. I’ve been following the AI whirlwind since trying Chat GPT on my summer holiday in January 23’. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a technology burst on to the scene as fast as AI. The uses seem to be endless, from taking a photo of the contents of your fridge to give you a recipe, to planning the itinerary for an overseas trip. The one common thread with all these AI tools is that they help you be more productive. You could look at the contents of your fridge and work out what you should cook without help, you could research & plan your next overseas trip, but using these AI tools just makes it that much faster. Enter Microsoft Copilot. Firstly, I must say, I love the name. It’s not “Autopilot”, it’s not “The Pilot”, it’s “Copilot”. It’s there to sit alongside you and help you to do your tasks.

In 2023, the National Cyber Security Centre issued a report that sheds light on critical trends in the cybersecurity landscape. As we navigate an increasingly digital world, understanding these insights becomes paramount.
