What's happening at Yorb - Q2 2024

Daniel Goymer • April 17, 2024

What a busy start to 2024, unfortunately we are approaching the end of our run of long weekends. We typically run our businesses in two gears, the external facing business with clients and the internal busyness that while frequently neglected is equally important in the long run. The trick has always been balancing those two, ensuring we can achieve immediate client goals, whilst preparing for tomorrow. It feels like this year we’ve been running in both gears from the very beginning with plenty of challenges and excitement in both.

We see the same challenges when working with our clients; the immediate needs of keeping users working & productive, ensuring backups are working and security is in check. But also balancing this with longer term strategic business and technology goals. We are currently launching our re-imagined Digital Partnership solution, working with clients on agreed quarterly focus areas, giving attention to topics such as Security, Business Continuity, Productivity, Future Technology (think AI, Chat GPT, Co-Pilot) and Business Intelligence. Our aims are to ensure you have the expertise, resources, and capacity to execute on your vision, whilst also keeping an eye on any day-to-day business requirements. With the ever-increasing pace of technological change and critical nature of IT in today’s business, this is an area that requires constant balancing.

In March, April and May we undertook seminars on the future of AI and Microsoft Co-Pilot in Whanganui, Levin, Palmerston North, Hastings, Greymouth and Westport. These were tremendously successful with over 180 people signing up to attend. There are a lot of misconceptions about AI and how it will impact our businesses. It’s important we all keep our eyes on where this technology is headed so we can plan for the opportunities and challenges it will inevitably bring. If you were unable to make the seminar, please head along to YouTube to watch the recording: Link Here, apologies for the audio issues at the start. We will of course be following this up with more material and webinars over the Winter period. If you have any particular topic requests, please let your Account Manager know.

MCI & Associates is an accountancy firm with over 45 employees across offices in Dannevirke and Pahiatua. The practice services a diverse range of clients, including those in the farming and commercial sectors, and its core services include tax preparation, business advisory and planning, and general accounting. The relationship between Yorb and MCI goes back over three decades to when both companies were in their formative stages. The trust-based relationship has endured and evolved as each business has grown and matured - going through name and ownership changes.

If you think cybercriminals only go after big corporations in major cities, think again. The majority of incidents recorded by the NCSC impact individuals and small to medium businesses, proving that cyber threats don’t discriminate based on location - they target opportunity. With over 23,000 reports to the Netsafe helpline, and $17.8M in losses reported last year, small-town businesses are very much in the spotlight. In the past few months alone, three local accounting firms in regional New Zealand have suffered a data breach, and local ISP - Inspire was recently the target of a malicious cyber attack.
